This is my Information Report about farming from 1850-now.
Do you know about farming in Canterbury?
Farming in Canterbury is a big industry and exports all sorts dairy products, crops, meat, wool etc. The golden years of farming in Canterbury were the 1950s-1980s due to high Sheep and wool prices.
Lambs/Sheep:
Over 83% of Lambs were shipped from the South Island, mostly from Canterbury. It takes a Manager, A shepherd and a Farmworker to handle 3400 sheep, at busy times everybody lends a hand. A Sheep Dog is very helpful to round up the Sheep.
Dairying:
Dairying was by far the most successful farming. Between 1985-2007 the number of dairy Cows nearly doubled.
Crops:
Two horses couldn't plough a great deal of the Farmers land. 4,5 or 6 horses had to. Now thy use Farming machinery which makes ploughing much quicker and efficient.
Did you know:
Did you know in 1895 Canterbury was noted in the newspaper as the standard term for best class of exported meat from New Zealand.
Did you know New Zealand exports 1/3 of the World's exported dairy products.
